The sage of Omaha is brilliant and rich and generous. He recently gave away over $30 billion of his fortune. By this generous act, Warren Buffett, champion of the estate tax, decides not to pay it. All rich estate tax payers are equal, but some are more equal than others. If you are worth, say, $10 million upon your death, then you should pay 55% percent of it to the Federal Government. If you are worth $50 billion, you should not pay the estate tax. Instead, create a tax exempt foundation...with parameters that you decide...to spend and invest the money. You can control the estate long after your death. Clearly, the Federal Government is not qualified to receive estates taxes from large estates.
